From Corporate Law to Innovative Property Developer: David Rennex’s Journey from Leadership in Law to Developing a Niche in Healthcare

There is no doubt that property development requires a diverse skill set. The most successful developers combine their passion for property with other skills to gain a competitive advantage and create unique opportunities. For MRDG Managing Director and Founder, David Rennex, it is a blend of legal acumen, strategic foresight, and an eye for detail that is most important.

David’s journey into the field of property development began in the corridors of one of London's top law firms, Herbert Smith Freehills. Here, he honed his skills in corporate law, gaining invaluable experience advising clients on influential matters. He immediately grew a passion for litigation – particularly in the property space – which is renowned for its complexity and high-stakes nature. His tenure at Herbert Smith Freehills provided the foundation upon which his future endeavours, specifically with MRDG, would be built.

Leveraging these skills – gained through a vast career incorporate law and property – David is now focused on creating robust investment opportunities in the Melbourne healthcare and social infrastructure space. With an emphasis on the reduction of risk and the promotion of social impact, David aims to offer unique opportunities for investors. From his roots in corporate law to his current role as an innovative property developer, Rennex's journey is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary skills and a strong commitment to identifying untapped market potential.

Establishing Merton Lawyers

Eager to pave his own path, Rennex returned home from the UK to Australia where he established Merton Lawyers, a boutique law firm specialising in property and litigation. As the driving force behind Merton Lawyers' property and litigation teams, Rennex distinguished himself as a trusted advisor to corporate entities navigating complex legal landscapes. His strategic insights and unwavering dedication to client success earned him a reputation as a force in the legal industry.

A Transition to Property Development

Driven by a desire to leverage his legal expertise in new and innovative ways, Rennex transitioned into the realm of property development. Equipped with a wealth of experience in risk assessment, strategy formulation, and leadership, Rennex embraced this new chapter with enthusiasm and determination. He has identified a unique opportunity in the market to capitalise on the ageing population and the increasing need for healthcare infrastructure and services in Australia; industries he is confident will offer unique returns in the coming years. Rennex works closely with the advisory team to steer MRDG's focus towards healthcare assets, recognising the growing importance and ongoing Government funding in this sector.

A Vision for the Future

Despite macro-economic indicators suggesting tough times ahead for many sectors, individuals like David Rennex stand out for their ability to find opportunities in seemingly difficult economic times. With continued investment by the Federal Government in Priority Primary Care Centre (PPCCs), MRDG is investing heavily to develop a unique and enticing model that is centred around GPs. This model looks to create a collection of symbiotic medical hubs which offer an appealing environment for GPs, allied health and medical retail. In uncertain economic times, David has foreseen this opportunity and is quietly confident in revealing MRDG’s latest development – 536-546 South Road, Moorabbin.
